7 Tips for Staying Healthy During the Holidays

My number one blog post request last month was to write about how I stay healthy during the holidays. Below are my top seven tips for keeping your body and mind healthy, while still enjoying the best time of year!

1. Drink Water

I know everyone says this, but if you’re not drinking enough water your body will be hurting no matter how good you eat. Not only does your body function off water, but drinking water also helps curb your appetite and prevents your tummy from feeling like it needs to indulge. To make drinking water a little more fun, I use an app called Plant Nanny. You can download it here from the App Store or Google Play. It’s kind of like having one of those giga pets from way back in the day. You enter your height, weight and daily activity level and it estimates the amount of water you should consume each day. Then, you pick a cute little plant & you water it everyday! You enter the size of your water bottle/glass & every time you finish one, you water your plant. It eventually grows (or dies) and it’s a lot of fun. My husband and I are constantly competing to see how many plants we can grow. He’s winning! I won’t lie, I kill my plants sometimes.

2. Sweat Daily

Whether you’re walking your dogs, going to the gym, or simply running to the grocery store to get a bottle of wine, make sure you’re physically working your body once a day! You don’t have to do a full workout everyday. Start small. I like to go for a long walk with my dogs every morning and every evening. If I don’t get to the gym that day, at least I know I got off my butt. Sweating releases so many happy endorphins & helps detox your body from all of the bad stuff you may consume, especially this season. This alone will help you feel refreshed and motivated to stay healthy. I like to do my workouts in the late-morning and shower before I start my day, because it helps me feel productive! After all, it’s a cycle. In order to want to successfully stay healthy, you have to be happy.

3. Don’t Buy Crap Food

I use the rule of thumb to shop along the outside of the grocery store as much as possible. That’s where all the fresh products are – meat, veggies, even prepped food from the deli. The only time I really shop in the center aisles is to pick up some condiments, bread and toiletries. The fact is, if you don’t have chocolate, cookies and crackers in your house, you won’t be tempted to eat them. So often, I crave sweets and the only thing sweet thing I have in the house is an apple. It’s a lot better eating an apple full of natural sugars than it is to eat a candy bar. Find healthy alternatives for your cravings! And only buy those things.

4. Take Your Vitamins

There are a lot of sicknesses that go around during the holiday season, don’t let your immune system get beat down! Make sure you’re taking a daily multivitamin to give you that extra boost.

5. Sleep

Everything is busy this time of year – you have to work extra long hours, socialize with more people and shop for a ton of gifts. Make sure you’re taking care of yourself by getting the sleep that you need! Shoot for at least seven hours a night. Your immune system and your mental health needs it! Don’t stay up to send one more email or scroll through Instagram. Save it for the next day. Set a bedtime! Stick to it.

6. Socialize Sugar-lessly

When you’re going out for drinks with your friends or co-workers, don’t order the Mojito with the sugary rum & syrups. Instead, order a vodka & tonic with lime or even my go-to… Vodka & Diet Coke. Don’t go “ew” until you try it! Everyone tells me I’m so weird for ordering this. But, I hate the taste of Vodka. I can drink Vodka & Diet Coke without the added sugar & it still tastes good. Another healthy option is Vodka and Coconut Water. It’s super hydrating and it tastes yummy! If you like coconut. Ask the bartender for sugar-free options though.

This goes for you coffee lovers as well! I’m a Starbucks girl til’ the day I die, but I’ve learned that all of those yummy holiday drinks come with a whole lot more sugar than is needed. The average Grande holiday beverage comes with four pumps of syrup! Yuck! I ask for just one and no whipped cream. It still tastes great! At least ask for half.

7. Indulge When it Counts

When your family gatherings come around… indulge! Eat that Christmas cookie & fill your plate with stuffing. It’s not often that you get together with your closest friends and family. Freaking enjoy it. The holidays are such a precious time of the year and I don’t like to waste them by watching my diet. Use the rest of the days of the year for that, but on Christmas, Thanksgiving, or whatever you may celebrate, soak it up!

  1. Great post! I also do the 1 pump sugar trick at Starbucks and I also do intermittent fasting around the holidays so I can indulge a little bit more without the guilt 🙂
